Trigger finger is named for the "clicking" or "popping" of the finger or thumb when brought from a bent to a straight position. The tendons that help the fingers and thumbs to bend slide through a sheath-like "tunnel." This tunnel is lined with a lubricant called tenosynovium. Trigger finger begins when the tenosynovium become inflamed due to overuse of the tendons or existing conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Eventually, the tendons themselves become inflamed. The irritation causes the tunnel opening to become smaller or the tendon to become too thick. When the affected finger straightens out, the tendon becomes temporarily stuck at the tunnel's mouth until it comes free with "catch" or "click." In very severe cases, the tendon does not come free, leaving the finger stuck in a bent position.
Trigger finger can be considered a Repetitive Motion Injury (RMI). Jobs or hobbies that keep the fingers in a consistantly bent or gripping position can lead to the development of this condition. Rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes also factor in. Trigger finger is more common in women than men.
Symptoms include the characteristic "catching" and "clicking" of the fingers, pain and stiffness. A small lump (nodule) may form on the palm, at the base of the affected finger.
A doctor may prescribe rest, a change in work habits, pain management, splinting, and/or specialized finger exercises. In severe cases, injections or surgery may be implemented.
