Skier’s thumb, originally called gamekeeper’s thumb, occurs when one of the ligaments connecting the bones of the thumb is torn. This injury is characterized by a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament resulting from force in the thumb joint,. This condition is particularly common among skiers. Skier’s thumb may happen suddenly or may develop over a period of time. Symptoms may include difficulty grasping objects between the thumb and finger. With skier’s thumb, movement of the thumb itself is very painful.
To treat skier’s thumb, the application of ice or cold therapy helps reduce inflammation and pain. Supporting your injured thumb in a splint or brace will stabilize the hand and help prevent pain from mobility.
