Olecranon Bursitis occurs when the olecranon bursa, positioned over the ulna at the tip of the elbow, becomes inflammed and swollen causing the elbow to appear larger than normal due to fluid accumulation. Because of its position close to the surface, the olecranon bursa is susceptible to trauma that causes inflammation. It also occurs from repetitive action such as leaning on the elbow for writing or other activities. Also called ″Popeye Elbow″, Olecranon Bursitis can also lead to infection, persistant drainage, and ulna nerve injury of the elbow.
Olecranon Bursitis can be treated by a doctor with a needle aspiration to drain excess fluid to relieve swelling. After aspiration, an elbow sleeve made of elastic or neoprene for compression may help prevent the fluid from accumulating again. Since the elbow is swollen and at more risk from unwanted contact, elbow pads are also recommended to prevent further trauma to the area. However, it is best that the elbow not experience excessive pressure from any elbow support or brace, and any compression should be administered conservatively.
