Deep Vein Thrombosis, or "DVT", is a blood clot that occurs generally in one of the deep veins (vein that accompanies an artery) that pass through the center of the leg. The blood clot, also called the "thrombosis", either slows or completely cuts off the flowing blood through that vein. During this time, swelling of the leg, warmth and redness, pain that is worsened by standing or walking, or even damage of the blood vessels can occur. If the blood clot completely blocks circulation, the thrombus can travel through the bloodstream and into the brain, lungs, heart, or other area, causing severe damage. Things that cause poor blood flow such as prolonged sitting or bed rest, being obese, history of heart conditions, increase the risk of DVT.
Preventing DVT is not very difficult. Exercise, weight management, wearing loose-fitting clothing, avoiding crossing the legs, hydration, and avoiding over the counter medications of blood clotting can help prevent DVT. Treatment for DVT aims to prevent enlargement of the clot, breaking loose of the blood clot, the formation of new clots, or problems that can lead to more dangerous conditions.
