A broken or fractured clavicle (collarbone) occurs when the bone on either side of the chest that connects the sternum (breastbone) to the shoulder breaks.
The most common cause of a clavicle fracture or broken collarbone is the result of trauma to the area, such as an automobile accident, sports injuries, falling, or from being hit on the shoulder.
