Magnet Therapy

For those unfamiliar with magnet or magnetic therapy, here are useful answers to some common questions:

What is magnet therapy?

Magnet therapy is an alternative therapy in which magnetic fields are administered by the application of magnets to certain parts of the body. Magnet therapy has been promoted to diagnose and/or treat a variety of conditions and diseases including arthritis, cancer, circulatory disorders, diabetic neuropathy (nerve disease), fibromyalgia, inflammation, pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and stress. No scientific evidence confirms these claims, though anecdotal evidence suggests that some people do experience some pain relief from magnet therapy.

How does magnet therapy work?

According to Healthline Networks, two theories explain magnetic therapy. One maintains that magnets produce a slight electrical current. When magnets are applied to a painful area of the body, the nerves in that area are stimulated, thereby releasing the body's natural painkillers. The other theory states that when magnets are applied to a painful area of the body, all the cells in that area react to increased blood circulation, ion exchange, and oxygen flow to the area. Magnetic fields attract and repel charged particles in the bloodstream, increasing blood flow and producing heat. Increased oxygen in the tissues and blood stream is thought to make a considerable difference in the speed of healing.

What are the benefits of magnets and magnetic therapy?

Some of the benefits that magnetic therapy claims to provide include:

  • Pain relief
  • Reduction of swelling
  • Improved tissue alkalinization
  • More restful sleep
  • Increased tissue oxygenation
  • Relief of stress
  • Increased levels of cellular oxygen
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Anti-infective activity

What are the risks?

No complications have been reported when used properly. However, some precautions should be taken. To be safe, DO NOT use magnets:

  • On the abdomen during pregnancy
  • When wearing a pacemaker, or any other implanted medical device, unless you check first with the manufacturer or your doctor
  • On an area of acute injury, such as a sprain
  • Within the same anatomical area when wearing a transdermal drug patch
  • On your abdomen for 60 to 90 minutes following meals

What products are available?

Magnetic fields, magnets, and magnetic devices are used to treat various physical and emotional conditions. These therapies are based on the premise that electrical activity exists in the body at all times, particularly as the heart beats or during bone production. Products used for therapy include:
