Scoliosis
Scoliosis is the unnatural curvature of the spine that develops at the beginning of puberty and progresses during rapid growth spurts. Girls are most affected by scoliosis, but boys are also susceptible. There is no known cause except that some people are just more prone to spinal curvature than others.
There are 3 types of scoliosis: Congenital, Neuromuscular, and Idiopathic. The most common, Idiopathic scoliosis, is found in adolescents where the spine curves away to the side. Symptoms include an uneven appearance in the shoulders and hips, fatigue, and pain in the upper and lower back.
As the scoliosis progresses, it is suggested that a brace be used to help slow down the escalation of spinal curves that are 25 to 40 degrees. Most children with scoliosis have a small curve at 20 degrees and don′t need a brace. In the majority of cases surgery or long term braces are not required. However, there are many ergonomic options that can be used to help ease the symptoms. |
