Lordosis is the increased inward curvature of the spine in the lumbar region that makes the buttocks appear more prominent. A small lordotic curve is common in most children and will usually not be of any concern as the child grows into adulthood. The lordosis will not progress further when the curve is flexible and reverses itself when the child bends over, but if it doesn′t move then consult a physician.
Excessive lordosis is called swayback and causes the shoulders to hunch and appear rounded (Scheuermann′s disease) in addition to the curved lumbar vertebrae. Achondroplasia, Spondyloisthesis, and Diskitis are all causes of lordosis. Cases of lordosis that do not require a physician′s help are not usually treated, however Inversion Therapy and other home care products may be used to help make the lordosis curve more flexible.
