Active Ingredients in Pain Creams, Gels, & Lotions

When choosing topical pain relief, one of the best ways to tell the difference between the various choices is to look at the ingredients.  The main ingredients in pain creams, gels, and lotions make up the majority of what effectively eases back pain and arthritis, reduces inflammation of sore joints and achy muscles, as well as helping soothe other muscular strains, bruises, and sprains.  View all Pain Creams, Gels, & Lotions

Aloe

Aloe comes from the dried leaf juice of one or more of the species of the aloe plant.  It can be used as an anti-inflammatory, a treatment of mild abrasions and burns, and is traditionally a strong skin-conditioning agent.  This natural first-aid can have a healing effect when used on the skin.

Menthol

Menthol is derived from peppermint oil, other mint oils, or can even be made synthetically.  It is able to be applied as a very mild local anesthetic, used as a counterirritant, and gives a cool feeling to the skin after application.  Menthol is in non-prescription products for short-term relief of muscle sprains, aches, and similar conditions.  We have a wide selection of menthol based products including Sombra Cool Therapy.

Camphor

Camphor originates from the wood of the Camphor Laurel Tree.  It gives a cool feeling to the skin with its' strong, penetrating, fragrant odor, and works as a skin-conditioning agent with its antiseptic and anesthetic properties.  Camphor absorbs into the skin, providing a numbing effect to the peripheral sensory nerves, to help relieve pain.

Capsaicin

Capsaicin comes from capsicum, the pepper plant or made artificially.  It is a stimulant that helps relieve aches and pains by stopping the pain signals that are sent to the brain due to inflamed joints.  Capsaicin can also be used for osteoarthritis and has been studied and proven effective for migraine pain.  View the Sombra Pain Relieving Gels to see what is best for you.
