Achilles Tendon RuptureThe Achilles tendon, the longest tendon in the human body, is a fibrous cord connected to the bone located on the posterior (bottom) portion of the foot, just above the heel (calcaneous). The pressure applied to an injured tendon may be more than five times your body weight. An untreated Achilles tendon rupture can result in excruciating pain and inability to walk comfortably. Vital for pushing off with the foot, a healthy Achilles tendon is essential for walking, running, or simply being able to stand on tiptoes.
Symptoms of a ruptured or torn Achilles tendon, also referred to Achilles calcaneus, include a pop or a snap of the heel cord followed by immediate, severe pain resulting in immobilization or difficulties walking properly without discomfort. The rupture may be caused from overstretching, flatfeet, tight or weak calf muscles, or poor stretching habits.
